Culture & lifestyle
As an urban village Doncaster Hill will enhance the rich
cultural history and heritage of our community and provide
opportunities for neighbourhood celebrations and a community-focused
lifestyle.
Public areas will feature open plazas and cafe lined streets
infused with public art, providing a strong 'sense of place'.
It promises to be an environment that encourages social interaction
and healthy lifestyles, through the provision of neighbourhood
services, access to schools and learning centres, shops, workplaces
and public transport, all within walking distance of residential
areas.
Doncaster Hill will be a bustling cosmopolitan centre, alive
with cafes, restaurants, urban art, shopping and entertainment.
Doncaster Road will be transformed into a tree lined boulevard,
and the focus of vibrant street activity. Safe and attractive
streets and open spaces will encourage walking and cycling.

Restaurants & cafes
Plans for Doncaster Hill include the provision of a number
of new restaurants and cafes, adding to the community experience
of the hill.
Plans have been approved for the construction of a nine-storey
luxury hotel on Doncaster Road, which will also include a
function centre and restaurant.
Other restaurants and cafes will be confirmed with the redevelopment
of Westfield and other developments on the hill.
Open space
The two primary open spaces that will be redeveloped as part
of the Doncaster Hill Strategy are Precinct 1 and Carawatha
Reserve. Further details of Manningham City Council's open
space plans for Doncaster Hill can be found in the Doncaster
Hill Open Space Backgrounds Paper, October 2003 (512Kb).
Precinct 1
Precinct 1 covers the non-residential area north of Doncaster
Road between Council Street and JJ Tully Drive and includes
major civic and educational facilities, such as the Council
Offices and Doncaster Primary School, as well as key historic
buildings and areas of open space.
It boasts spectacular views of the mountain ranges to the
north and east and offers easy access to Westfield Doncaster
Shoppingtown.
It will ultimately incorporate open urban plaza areas, an
amphitheatre with community entertainment, and public education
services.
Heritage buildings and landscapes in the precinct will be
retained and enhanced. It is also envisaged to incorporate
strong pedestrian links to other areas of Doncaster Hill.
The Doncaster
Hill Precinct 1 Community Infrastructure Assessment (740Kb)
provides further information on the potential for Precinct
1 to become a community focal point.
Carawatha Reserve
Carawatha Reserve is in the first stage of a two-stage upgrade,
with Stage 1 due to be completed in early 2008.
Stage 1 of the Carawatha Reserve upgrade includes further
seating opportunities that maximise views to the south, enhanced
play areas, provision of innovative shelter, and improved
landscaping.
Saxon Reserve
Saxon Reserve, in Precinct 4, is being upgraded as part of
the Doncaster Hill Strategy. Council is currently preparing
a Development Plan for the reserve to provide direction for
the future use, development and management of the reserve.
The project is in its first phase - asking people in the
local community about what they value about the reserve, what
they use it for, and what issues should be addressed in planning
for future use and development.
