Second SmartBus service arrives at Doncaster HillThe Green Orbital SmartBus service (route 902), which runs between Chelsea and Airport West recently commenced operation through Doncaster Hill. This service links with, and expands upon the Red Orbital route 903, which has been servicing Manningham since April 2009. The route will travel west along Doncaster Road and north up Williamsons Road, stopping at Westfield Doncaster. It will connect Manningham residents with major train stations such as Nunawading and Eltham, as well as V/Line train services at Broadmeadows and The Glen and Greensborough Plaza Shopping Centres.
Developer Expo planned for 2010The Doncaster Hill 2010 Developer Expo: Doncaster Hill on the Rise, will be held on Friday 4 June 2010, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. The Expo will continue Council's efforts to build awareness of Doncaster Hill's potential as a prime site for a range of mixed use residential and commercial developments. It will provide an opportunity to profile key stakeholders, hear high profile speakers present on topics of interest to the development industry, and make contact with exhibitors such as Sustainability Victoria, the Department of Planning and Community Development and Loddon Mallee Housing Services. The Madison development approvedA major new development on Doncaster Hill has been given the go-ahead after being called in by the Minister for Planning, Justin Madden. A permit has been issued for 'The Madison' apartments at 91-93 Tram Road, a ten-storey development with 84 apartments. The application was approved by Council on 11 August 2009 and, after being appealed at VCAT, was called in by the Minister in November 2009.
Developer confidence in Doncaster HillDevelopers of The Madison, local family business Spec Property Developments, say the project is already proving to be a success, with 35 per cent of the building pre-sold. Fundamental to the ongoing success of Spec Property Developments' apartment projects is a commitment to clients that projects will actually be built. Spec Property Group spokesperson, Josh Abdelmalak says 'It is absolutely critical in this market that we make the consumer aware that what they are investing in is an actual, viable product, not just an idea.' Spec Property Developments has recently completed the Viridian apartment complex in Doncaster East and is currently constructing the Acadia apartments in Doncaster. Construction on The Madison is scheduled to begin in June, with completion due by December 2011.
VCAT approves Westfield developmentThe Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has granted approval to Westfield's application for a permit to construct five apartment buildings to the north-east of the Westfield Doncaster shopping centre, at 1 Grosvenor Street. The permit allows the construction of buildings and works for dwellings in one ten-storey, one four-storey and three three-storey buildings, together with associated car parking.
Students explore landscape opportunities on the HillWith support from Manningham City Council, University of Melbourne Landscape Architecture Masters students have explored planning and design options for a linear site of approximately three kilometres from Doncaster Hill and Westfield to Ruffey Lake Park. The students' concept designs included rain gardens, wetlands, water features, plazas, meeting areas, underpasses, land art installations, traffic control measures and lighting arrangements. Work begins on affordable housing developmentConstruction of the affordable housing development at 95-99 Tram Road officially commenced in December, with Housing Minister Richard Wynne joining Manningham Mayor, Cr Charles Pick to launch the project. Mr Wynne said the $39.7 million project, which has received funding from the Federal Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan, “will sustain about 180 jobs and provide greater economic security for Doncaster.” The 10 storey apartment complex, with 98 affordable rental housing units, will be managed by Loddon Malle Housing Services (LMHS), one of the leading providers of affordable housing and homelessness services in Victoria and provide housing for struggling Manningham families.
Carawatha Reserve works completedA celebratory barbecue was held with residents in late March at Carawatha Reserve to celebrate the completion of the reserve's upgrade. The reserve now has improved play equipment, a new shelter, upgraded paths, seating, tables and landscaping and a barbecue. Although located just outside the Doncaster Hill boundary, Carawatha Reserve is designated as part of Doncaster Hill's open space, attracting funds for improvement works to cater to the growing needs of the community.
Pedestrian and Cycling Plan approved by CouncilThe Doncaster Hill Pedestrian and Cycling Plan was approved by Council in February, following consideration of submissions and the incorporation of community feedback from the consultation period. The Plan will replace the 2003 version and provide more emphasis on linkages to public transport and encouraging more sustainable forms of travel.
