Crowne Plaza announced for hotel siteInterContinental Hotels Group recently announced that it will be managing the hotel development at 682 Doncaster Road as a Crowne Plaza hotel, which will be the Doncaster area's first international hotel. Scheduled for completion in early 2011, the five star, nine-storey hotel will include 140 rooms, as well as a ballroom, naturally lit meeting place, fitness centre with pool, and an all day dining restuarant and bar. Information session on boundary proposal - 25 February 2009A community information session will be held by the Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD), regarding the proposed adjustement to the Doncaster Hill boundary, on 25 February 2009. The minor extension to the boundary includes a number of additional commercial properties, adjacent to the municipal offices. DPCD is reviewing the boundaries of five Activity Centres to ensure they are established to a consistent set of criteria. Interested residents are invited to attend between 6.00pm and 8.00pm on Wednesday 25 February in Function Room 3, Manningham Civic Offices, 699 Doncaster Road, Doncaster, to speak with officers from DPCD.
Saxon Reserve upgradeWork is well underway on the upgrade of Saxon Reserve, located on the northern boundary of Westfield Doncaster, on Saxon Street. The upgrade is taking place in two stage, with stage 1 including works to improve the visual amenity and access links between the reserve's two levels, moving power lines underground, improved playground and landscaping elements, providing shelter and seating, and enhancing the southern entrance.
$500,000 library funding securedCouncil will receive $500,000 from the State Government to go towards the development of a state-of-the-art library in the Doncaster Hill Civic Precinct. The new library is part of the $28.35 million Civic Precinct project, and will provide significantly improved public library infrastructure as well as being a place for people to meet and access technology, information and reading resources.
Smart Energy Zone fundingManningham has been shortlisted by Sustainability Victoria for a $750,000 Smart Energy Zone grant and been awarded $30,000 to proceed to the next stage. Smart Energy Zones will demonstrate that by combining supply and demand solutions and developing local energy opportunities, communities can dramatically and cost-effectively reduce their greenhouse intensity. Council has also applied for $1.5 million funding from the Federal Government through its Green Precinct program. The Green Precincts Fund aims to support project initiatives that encourage water and energy savings measures at the community level.
Issues Forum meeting 22 October 2008The third meeting of the Doncaster Hill Issues Forum was held on 22 October 2008. Attendees discussed their vision for transport, traffic and parking on the Hill.
Westfield Doncaster's grand openingWestfield Doncaster was officially opened by Victorian Premier the Hon John Brumby on 16 October 2008. About 20 months after works began on the redevelopment, the new-look centre more than doubled in size and expanded from 200 to around 420 stores, creating one of Melbourne's premier retail destinations.
Shared path works completedWorks on the creation of a shared path linking Precinct 1 and Westfield Doncaster were completed in October 2008, with widened walking and cycling paths created behind Doncaster Primary School, and along Council and Goodson Streets. Directional signage has also been installed at various points for key sites within Doncaster Hill. Eastern Metropolitan MP, Brian Tee, officially announced the completion of works on the shared path, as well as theDoncaster Hill Pedestrian Underpass on 22 October 2008. Amendments C72 and C76 approvedTwo amendments relating to the Doncaster Hill Strategy - Amendment C72 and Amendment C76 - were approved in late 2008. Resulting from a Priority Development Panel recommendation to ensure all land in Doncaster Hill is development ready, Amendment C72 emoves restrictive covenants from six Doncaster Hill properties. Amendment C76 rezones Council owned land (600A Doncaster Road, 2 Elgar Court, 101 Tram Road) and privately owned land (3 Elgar Court and part of Elgar Court - road) to a Comprehensive Development Zone (CDZ1).
