MC2 - Manningham City SquareAround a year out from the opening of the new Civic Precinct Community Hub, Council recently announced the official name of the community facility - MC2 (Manningham City Square). The street number for the facility be located at 687 Doncaster Road. The name was endorsed at the 28 June Council meeting. MC2 was chosen not only as an abbreviation of Manningham City Square - with the building, forecourt and surrounds to act as a meeting place for the community - but also to represent the synergies within the new facility and the fact the building will generate its own energy through an innovative trigeneration plant.
Affordable housing development doors openHaven's affordable housing development at 95-99 Tram Road was officially opened last month by the Minister for Housing, the Hon. Wendy Lovell MLC. Tenancy is still available in the contemporary six-star energy rated apartment building, located in close proximity to Westfield Doncaster, public transport, schools and the new Manningham City Square community hub. Many residents, from pension-level singles and retired couples through to working families earning up to $81,000 a year may be eligible to apply for an apartment at Doncaster Hill's most affordable rental address. In each case, eligibility criteria are assessed, including income and assets. A self-assessment test is available at the 99 Tram Road website.
Smart Energy Zone Memorandum of UnderstandingManningham City Council and United Energy will explore options for the Doncaster Hill Smart Energy Zone through a Memorandum of Understanding signed at the 30 August Council meeting. The Smart Energy Zone initiative - which has been supported through funding from Sustainability Victoria and the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities - could include local energy generation, micro-grids, energy efficiency measures, smart meters, energy storage and innovative electricity tarffis.
Traffic and parking reviewThe Donaster Hill Traffic and Parking Review is continuing, with a community information session being held on 29 June with approximately 50 residents and stakeholders attending and providing feedback. The review is being undertaken by GTA Consultants, with land use forecasts informing the modelling work, in line with the Victorian Integrated Transport Model. An audit of car parking utilisation at completed developments is proposed and pedestrian counts have been undertaken. The review is expected to be finalised in early 2012.
Water information packCouncil has prepared a Doncaster Hill Water Information Pack (DHWIP) that provides guidance to developers on the available options for implementing sustainable water management solutions for their proposals. The DHWIP offers a number of strategies that developments can employ to better manage stormwater within their development footprint. Water usage on the Hill is a central part of the sustainability focus for all development, and a number of initiatives are being implemented, including the installation of a third pipe in current and future developments.
State funding to attract investmentManningham City Council recently received $77,000 in grant funding from the Department of Planning and Community Development to undertake a study exploring the types of market mechanisms that would attract future commercial and retail tenants to Doncaster Hill, with a particular focus on creating 'green' jobs. The project is being undertaken by consultants, SGS Economic and Planning, and will provide an understanding of Doncaster Hill's potential for future commercial and retail attraction, as well as an action plan to attract private sector business. Developments on the riseFollowing the completion of the affordable housing development, three other major projects are taking shape and nearing completion. Prominent high-density apartment buildings, The Madison at 91 Tram Road and The Pinnacle at 632 Doncaster Road, have marked the changing face of the Doncaster Hill and will bring new vibrancy and activity to the area. They are due for completion in February and June 2012 respectively. Work on stages 1 and 2 of The Berkeley on Berkeley Street is also coming to an end, with the building set to open in December 2011.
