Posts rise for stylish underpass entry
4 August 2008
The upgrade of the Doncaster Hill pedestriang
underpass is continuing, with the installation of a canopy at the Doncaster
Primary School end underway.
Two support posts are currently in place, but to
give the concrete footing time to cure, the second construction stage
will not commence until mid-August. While the underpass will remain open
throughout, the construction zone will be fenced off during the second
stage.
When complete, the canopy will offer some shade
and shelter and act as a stylish marker of the entry point to the underpass,
which could be easily missed previously.
The canopy will consist of two steel framed structures
with a blue coloured polycarbonate roof. The project has been overseen
by the Doncaster Hill Pedestrian Underpass Steering Committee, which includes
representatives from the Department of Transport, Doncaster Primary School,
the Doncaster and Templestowe Artists Society and the property owner at
682 Doncaster Road. It has been jointly funded by the State Government
through its Local Area Access Program (LAAP).
A canopy in the same style will be installed at
the southern end of the underpass as part of the proposed hotel development
at 682 Doncaster Road.
The underpass upgrade is part of efforts to attract
greater pedestrian activity on Doncaster Hill, which also include the
current works to create widened, shared paths along Council and Goodson
Streets.
